This class will focus on the controversial issue of jihad and on the many myths associated with it. What is jihad? What is the relationship between jihad and war? What is the Islamic concept of war? These are some of the questions this class will address.

Title: Islam and Human Rights: The Quranic Concept of the Human Being
This introductory class will focus on the meaning of the human being as well as the purpose of his creation. Understanding the meaning and the mission of man is critical for the understanding of the concept of human rights in Islam.

   Islamic Wisdom Teacher Seeking Peace Coming to Bend

Imam Mamadou Toure, a seventh generation spiritual teacher from Senegal, will be in Bend for a day of teaching October 7th. The Interfaith Ministries of Central Oregon (IMCO), a group of diverse faith groups in Central Oregon is sponsoring his visit. We are so fortunate to have a Muslim cleric with his perspective visit Bend sharing his wisdom and living in Oregon. Imam Toure serves the Islamic community of Oregon from the Bilal Mosque in Beaverton and founded the Institute of Islamic and Interfaith Studies. Their mission desires to educate Muslims about the spirituality of scriptural and prophetic Islam promoting Islam as a religion of education, service and peace. He also wishes to promote meaningful dialogue between Islam and all other religious systems to bring acceptance, appreciation and respect between all faiths. He actively contributes to a faith-based solution to support world peace.

A community forum will be held at 3-5 pm, at Nativity Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhaus at Knott, when he will speak on the Seven Principles of Holiness. The talk will look at seven universal principles, present in all scriptures which, when put into practice, will allow us to live in our daily lives as holy women and men.

Imam Toure will start the Sunday giving the sermon, In Search of the Sacred: The Challenges for Religion today at two services at Nativity Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhaus Road at Knott at 9 and 11 am. The talk will explore the role and function of religion, the role and function of the human being and the challenges facing women and men of religion in the modern world. These issues will be looked at from the perspective of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim scriptures and traditions.

Imam Mamadou Toure is the keynote speaker at the Festival of Faith 2007. The event will occur at the Portland State University Smith Center, ballroom and classrooms (Broadway and Montgomery) from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The event is being organized by Interfaith Council of Greater Portland (ICGP). A brochure for the event is avaiable in PDF form.
